Evening Book Group

Tuesday Evening Book Group

We meet at 7:30 pm in the Parlor (across from the office) on the third Tuesday of each month. We do not meet in the summer.

Join us for lively, thoughtful discussion of a variety of good writing.

September 18
Winter Birds by Jamie Langston Turner - a "Christian" novel.
A sour old woman reflects on her disappointing life but gradually her outlook changes as she lives with her nephew and his wife whose faith gives them the strength to deal with hardships that come their way. One reviewer noted, "It is a well crafted, poignant tale of God's love and compassion shown through the lives of everyday, imperfect people. Its message inspires me to be faithful in loving those around me through the seemingly insignificant things of a life filled with service."

October 16
Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books by Azar Nafisi - nonfiction.
For two years before she left Iran in 1997, the author, a former university professor, gathered six young women for secret weekly discussions of Western literature. The stories of these women under radical Islam intertwine with those they are reading. Although not required, this book will be a richer experience for those familiar with the books the author discusses: Nabokov's Lolita, The Great Gatsby, Daisy Miller, Washington Square, and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

November 14 WEDNESDAY (to avoid Thanksgiving conflicts)
Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace ... One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin - nonfiction.
Lost after failing to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered and nursed in a remote Pakistani village. In return he pomised to build the first school in that impoverished place, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools.
